Mission play ball

February 21, 2013, by Olivia

The Missionaries made their Dodgeball debut in Wood Wharf last night, in an event organised by Dodgeball London.

Going into an athletic abyss of the unknown as dodgeball amateurs, The Missionaries had a difficult start, instantly coming up against the champions of the last tournament.

We lost this first battle rather convincingly, but then went on to win against two rather impressive teams (predominantly male while we had a team male to female ratio of 1:3). Although the atmosphere was of a competitive nature, we became particularly close to a team known as ENDODGE who fast became our cheer leaders, affectionately cheering and supporting ‘The Losers’, our nickname due to our subtle uniform choice.

Once we had a better idea of the rules and whose strengths lay where, we soon began to pick up points. There were some incredible individual and team performances, culminated in an epic battle against the hated ‘Blue-Vests’ who had earlier taken a cheap shot at star ball collecter Sarah Tipping as she was leaving the field of play. This then acted as a catalyst for revenge for the Missionaries (aka The Losers).

In the final round, and with an entire crowd behind us, Captain Alex Wilson found himself in a 3 on 1 situation which he was able to turn around with a catch, bringing the injured warrior Terence Shek back into the game. The two of them cleaned out the remaining opposition in style. This was received by universal and rapturous celebration from the spectating crowd and a team hug of epic proportions. Alex cried a little.

The tournament is a quarterly event, and we cannot wait for the next one. Incredible effort by all involved; Olivia (The Distractor), Suz (Twinkle Toes), Jun (Mexican Ninja), Tee (Injured Warrior), Tipping (Wipe Out), Ned (Wind Up King) and Jenni (The Bait).

“We may not have won the tournament, but we leave as heroes. The tequila may have helped.” – Alex Wilson – Proud captain of the Missionaries
